Introduction
I. Background
The Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP) area forms a high-tech supply chain, integrating academia, industries and R&D and encouraging industrial upgrading in southern Taiwan. Many high-tech engineers are needed in STSP, especially for the integration of different areas.
Based above needs, The Graduate Institute of System Engineering at National University of Tainan was established in 2005. It was the first graduate program in Taiwan, Republic of China (ROC) to offer an interdisciplinary post graduate education with emphases in the fields of Precision Manufacturing, Automation, Optomechatronics, and System Integration.
II. Goal of Establishment
- Integration of science subjects of all fields in engineering area, to cultivate system engineering students with the abilities of developing the new products and creating the new technologies.
- According to the needs of current manufacturing industry, to cultivate system engineering students with the abilities to solve the system problems of precision manufacturing industry.
- Through the training of optomechatronics, to cultivate students to be a high techniques specialist in optical industry.
III. Curriculum
Based on the above directions, the curriculum in S.E. graduate institute are included four areas of the optomechatronics, precision mechanics, information engineering, and electrical engineering. The practical training is focused in the system engineering.
IV. Faculty
Owing to the needs of System Engineering in advanced manufacturing industry, the graduate institute of system engineering is focused on the integrated system of Precision Manufacturing and OptoMechatronics in the beginning development. In future expectations are as follows:
- To cultivate the high level engineers who are able to solve the problems of system engineering.
- To enforce the domestic or international cooperation with industry, government, and academy.
- To develop the innovative products and create the new technologies integrated in different areas.
V. Characteristics and development
The graduate institute of system engineering currently has five faculty member, two professors, two associate professors and one assistance professor. The well experienced faculty members will be recruited in the future.
VI. Development of graduate
- The students can work on the precision manufacturing, mechtronics, automation and optical industries.
- The students can continue in the advanced studies in Ph. D. program.
